Old School And I Don’t Care

IMG_0282

I know I have gone a bridge too far in my discussions with my daughters about what I call ‘the study’. The centerpiece of this discussion is the couch, which is covered in the fabric above (old school Waverly). This couch has been covered in this fabric for at least 20 years, and it is soft- very , very soft.

If you have adult children you know what I mean.

Me to Them:  “Let me just ask you one question-just one, I promise. What should I do about the study?”

Them:  Eyes glazed, heads rolling loosely on their precious necks.

Or Worse:  “Mother, I thought we had decided that.”

(Help! Could someone refresh my memory please? What did WE decide?)

So, I quit. I give up. The couch stays as is because it is soft and the perfect spot to take a nap.

On one of my many random trips to TJ Maxx, I found the Ralph Lauren blue and white pillows for $10.  I know they are part of a bedding set- but that makes sense, right? After all napping is an important part of this room. This makes the room more about blue and white I think.

The pair of lamps on the library table behind the couch were a great find (on sale) . They are easy to reach if you have been reading and you get sleepy.

I have such a hodge podge of things in this room that have served me well.

This top to a piano is sitting on top of a faux fireplace mantel I found on the side of the road.

All of these pieces were painted white.  One of my favorite memories was seeing a million pieces of my furniture sitting out in the yard being sprayed white by my painter. I was in HEAVEN.

The month prints are from Warrenton and the lamp is something I found at the flea market.  The electrical trades teacher at the high school where I taught wired it for me. The base is cracked, but I don’t care.

So , what about the study? I think I’ve decided.

I used to have that very same Waverly print in my old house, not on a sofa, but in the bathroom where I had maroon, peach, and green in the tile. It was an old craftsman style house and that was the only print that would bring those colors together and make it work. I still love it. I could so envision sitting in your room on your comfy sofa and having coffee with you. We have very similar taste. I love the way you have put it all together.

Some fabrics are classic. Your room looks so comfortable and inviting, a good place to relax. I love all your white pieces. It's true what they say about white paint, it really brings everything together. I think we have the same daughters.
love ya,

I love Sister Parrish designs and everything in my house would look very chintzy if it were not for my husband.

LOL, that conversation with your kids cracked me up. I can so see my daughter saying that to me. Every thing looks lovely!!

I love the look here; I, for one, would have no trouble napping on that sofa with one of those pillows under my head. Night night!

You and I have a similar situation- the sofa in our study is seriously outdated as far as fabric goes. But it is, like yours, the most comfortable place to take a snooze!! So, for now, it stays. I will replace it with the leather that is currently in the great room, which is not near as comfy.
I like all your white- it is fresh and serves as a great background for all your pretty accessories.
thanks for joining in on the give-away. ~ Sue

Hi Laura...

Ohhh...I love, love, LOVE your study, my friend! It's simply gorgeous! It has such a sweet English Country ambiance and I adore that! Such a beautiful, warm and cozy, and very inviting room! I love your Waverly rose sofa...I'm so happy that you left it as is, it's a beautiful piece of furniture and it does whisper..."take a nap"! Hehe! I love how you brought all of the beautiful blue and white into the room...and yes, my eyes went to the blues and white right away! I love, love, LOVE the soft buttery yellow wall color...beautiful!!! Ohhh Laura, that fabulous piece (the piano top) is simply breathtaking...it's magnificent! Is that the piece that you found on the side of the road...or the faux fireplace? Either way...what a GRAND find, my friend! Oooh...you did so GOOD with this pretty room!!! Everything is perfect!!!

Warmest wishes and Happy Spring!

Your room is perfect, Laura. :) Wouldn't change a thing. Is there a blanket for napping? It could be blue. :)

When I first saw just the picture of the fabric I thought it might be time for a change but when I saw how it fit in the context of the beautiful room you put together I thought it looked perfect. I think the room has a wonderful cozy feel, a perfect place to relax.

I think you'll have regrets if you change a great napping place. Its a tranquil, relaxing room as is.

Love the blue & white accents. The sofa is like our favorite old dress...comfy. So for a classic sometimes we just need new/old jewelry, and ya know...pillows are just jewelry for a sofa.
Sweet nap dreaming ;-)

You realize some people pay big bucks to have a room exactly like you have! It could be in a House Beautiful. I love the look, the comfort, the style and yes, the sofa!

Oh, my daughters also get the glazed, take me anywhere but here when Mom is talking home dec, look in their eyes :)

I just stumbled upon your blog and guess what? I live in Kingsville. It's raining today so I'm playing on my computer.

Are you going to Warrenton this month? I can't wait!

Happy hunting,
Teresa

Well Laura I hope your decision includes keeping the sofa as is. Unless of course you are thinking of sending it to me, I know right where I would put it.
Sometimes I think we can be coaxed into have our entire house 'done'(like perfectly decorated), but some rooms need to be all about comfort and coziness. I have two such rooms and while they may never be pictured on my blog, they are our favorite places to just hang.

everyone has different taste. we should decorate our homes the way we like and in a way that we're happy and comfortable in. trends are constantly changing, and sometimes we don't have the energy or $$ to change with them. that's okay too. :)

Hi Laura,
I have a window treatment that I sewed of the same fabric as your sofa..... It was used in my daughter's room when she was small. If this is something that you could use, please let me know. I LOVE your blog!!!!

I absolutely adore the couch print. It looks serene and comfy and cozy. All the necessities to me. I have two adult daughters. What do they know? Just a few years ago I was asking the oldest one (now 35) why she couldn't put one of the quilts I made her on the wall or over the couch for color (she was needing color and indecisive). She looked at me like I was deranged. "Mother, I can't do that." Now just look at Pottery Barns current trends, my dear. Your tried and true "go to" store. Ha!

I LOVE IT. It's perfect. I could come and stay in there forever, so watch out :-) FYI: I left my sofa the same "soft" fabric until it began to literally split from love and age. I enjoyed every thread of it. Just replaced it last summer! xoxo

Hi Laura,

Thanks for visiting me! :)

If you like your study... you should keep it as is. I think it's great! I have always liked the blue/white theme. I have 1 teacup/saucer that is blue & white that my MIL gave to me. I love it! She promised to give me a piece of her china every year for Christmas. Sadly, I only recieved that 1 cup & saucer... she passed unexpectedly... and the rest of the dishes are sitting with my FIL. I've always been too nervous to ask for them. :)

Amyhoo, I love your blue & white room...

hugs, Joanna
