I Ran

IMG_4815

I think I was meant for another time.

Have you ever watched someone handle a pocket knife when

trying to show you something?

As I walked my father to his truck this evening,

after a visit,

he stopped to admire the mountain laurel trees he had planted in my front yard.

He then walked over,

pulled off a pod of seed,

and pulled out his pocket knife

to show me the inside of the seed.

This was all done without talking.

And then

I ran

as fast as my bare feet could muster-

to grab my camera-

before that pocket knife went back in his pocket,

and my mountain laurel lesson was over.

My father doesn’t pose.

I decided right then and there

that I want a pocket knife.

I am going to casually pull it out to show my girls and grandsons

things.

Can we just talk about how much I love your posts?? Well, I do. And let me say what a blessing to have your daddy in your life :-). Yes, you definitely need a pocket knife. And you'll have to practice using it so effortlessly ;-). XOXO

I feel so fortunate to have your dad for a neighbor. I haven't seen him in a while. It's about time for those white shorts to come out isn't it?
Pocket knives are so special. I have pockets knives from my grandfather, father and David's dad. They are precious to us.
'night!

This was a little jewel of a post. I hope you get yourself a knife and find lots of wonderful ways to use it in front of your grandchildren.

a pocket knive is a right of passage in my husbands family....usually around 5 or 6 years old the boys get one and they know that it is a tool...not a toy....they learn to use them properly....when my daughter was that age she wanted one too...so guess what her daddy did...he taught her about pocket knives and bought her one....great post....I love your Dad's hands

I do not say this to sadden you but I buried my father with his pocket knife because it was always such a daily part of every thing he did. ♥O

No my friend, I disagree. You weren't meant for another time. You were meant for this time to remind us to look beyond the trees to see and remember our own forest of memories we might have temporarily forgotten.

P.S. There is a beauty in a man's hands that comes with time and hard work.
P.P.S. I think your pocket knife is your words.

You are a very lucky lady to have your dad in your life. We almost lost mine this past winter to pneumonia. He is 90. Have a great day!

Oh Laura, what a blessing to get to run to get your camera and to get that perfect shot of your dear daddy! Aww, that is an amazing photograph my friend. My dad always had a pocket knife in his pocket, always. I have so many memories of him holding it just like your daddy, just doing stuff. My daddy had quite a collection of them. A man and his knife. I want one.

Beautiful, you gave me chills with this post! So many emotions and memories of my dad, and now my husband with their pocketknives. I think my husband needs to give one to our 18 year old son and continue the tradition. have a blessed weekend!
