Basketball, Chicken Pot Pie, and a Pastry Cutter

IMG_3680

There is nothing that I enjoy more than taking

my nephew food to enjoy (with his Dad-my brother) after his basketball games.

This season I am off to a late start, but tomorrow night I am making up for lost time.

The absolute most fun of all is taking the unexpected.

Last year for one game it was an entire spiral sliced ham.

Tomorrow night I am taking

Pioneer Woman’s Chicken Pot Pie

(which is covered with her Perfect Pie Crust Recipe)

Two bags of Sister Schubert rolls
with two sticks of real butter

and

a pecan pie from Sweet and Tasty Bakery in McAllen.

I want to knock his socks off.

He knocks mine off every time I watch him play.

I want him to think,

“That crazy Aunt Laura brought a huge chicken pot pie to a basketball game.”

That makes me smile.

To ensure the pie crust is flaky and tastes delicious,

I am using my mother’s cobalt blue pyrex mixing bowl

and her pastry cutter.

Even if it is less than perfect,

it won’t matter.

Aside from the fact that you

could wrap pastry dough around a rock and my family would line up for a piece,

this is all about love

and the quiet way this young man always says,

“Thanks Aunt Laura.”

You have every right to be proud of that boy, Laura. He has lead his team to be 4th in state in 1A - Division 2. Trey is playing his heart out for this country school basketball team that as I have learned through the years.. those memories never die! He and his daddy are going to love that chicken pot pie, rolls and pecan pie! Lucky guys!!
(Love the way your mom is making an appearance with her cobalt blue bowl and pastry cutter.)

How sweet of you! My mom had an old pastry cutter thingy similar to that. Old wooden handle with most of the tan and red paint peeled off of it. :)

I'd nearly go play if I could have a homemade chicken pot pie. I have a friend that makes wonderful chicken pot pies and that is what I request for my birthday present... even though I have a summer b/day, she waits and makes them for me in the winter months..... I wish your nephew and his team continued success.

We always enjoy a good basketball game.

What a great aunt you are. I wish I thought to be more thoughtful like that. I know I would love for someone to bring me a present like that, so I'm going to bake something next time I go visit my grandchildren or brothers (nephews are too far away). You've inspired me!
