Dear Daughters: My IPod

image

Dear Daughters:
An important part of your genetic history
is archived,
not in scrapbooks or photo albums but
on my
IPod.
You have proven a million times over
that you are smart enough and cool enough
to not
place music into generational categories,
thereby ignoring it,
if it is not a product of your generation.

That makes me very proud.
So here is a starter list
of award winners,
not of the experts,
but from me,
from my IPod.
***

Best Male Voice……..Michael McDonald
originally of the Doobie Brothers, and to date as a single artist.
I know his hair is white, which may not fit your esthetic, but aside from that,
his covers of Motown are some of my favorites.
And his voice.  Oh my.

Best Intro to a Soul Song…….. Shotgun, Jr. Walker and the All-Stars
I can’t tell you how many times I hit replay on this one.
Even in my 45 record days,
in my lavender bedroom,
in front of the mirror.

Best Male Lead Singer of a Band……..Steve Perry, Journey
His second award should be
Most Recognized Voice.
Don’t Stop Believin makes me want to drive fast.

Best Soul Group/Best Album…….. The Four Tops
The Four Tops Greatest Hits
This album was the soundtrack to
my freshman year at boarding school.

Best British Soul Voice Period…….. Steve Winwood
Do not play Roll With It while driving.
Texting has nothing over dancing while driving.

Best Creative Band……..Fleetwood Mac
Favorite Song……..You Make Lovin Fun

Best Marvin Gaye Dance Song……. Got to Give it Up
Best Marvin Gaye Friendship/ Family Song……..Ain’t No Mountain High Enough

Best Song to Get Your Dad to Dance………Taking Care of Business, Randy Bachman
It works every time.
Best Driving to Work Song…….. Start Me Up, The Rolling Stones

Best Soul Sounding Female Country Singer……..Bonnie Raitt
plus from Bonnie Raitt
Best Female Heartbreak Song……..I Can’t Make You Love Me
Best Easy Listening Song……..Nick of Time

Best All -Time Album for The Time It Was Created…….. Tapestry, Carole King

Best 70’s Band…….. Creedence Clearwater Revival

CCR was all about country and soul and protest.
When I hear them now, I think of James Lee Burke novels.
Favorites:  Born on the Bayou, Green River, Fortunate Son.
Proud Mary is just a little too stereotypical CCR for me.
Fortunate Son makes me think of Viet Nam and
the draft.

Ask Dad about his memories of the draft.

Tomorrow I am posting Summer hits 2013.

What are your favorites?

All Right Now...Free!

We feel about our 'library' the way you do about your music Laura. One of the most revealing things husband I have are our books...speaks volumes (bad pun) about the two of us. Hubby thinks it's the best thing we can leave our girls.

Great list Laura! (from a fellow soul sister!)

Smokey is smokin'. My dad's favorite bands were CCR and the Stones, he would have been 83 this year. My kids have wonderfully eclectic musical tastes. I think it comes from easy accessibility. What a great world we live in with so much at our fingertips. I met Bonnie Raitt way back in the stone age when I worked part time in a record store while in college. Remember record stores? Oh what memories music brings!

It's not on your iPod, but it was in your tape deck when I was a kid - the Top Gun soundtrack. Anytime I hear "Highway to the Danger Zone" I can remember Mr. Harrison flying down the canals to drop us off at school.

Oh my gosh! I had to stop reading three times so I could dance around my kitchen!! This is better than Curves.

(pause to dance to Creedance Clearwater)

I have decided to record a dozen good dance songs that I will play each morning.

(Ahhhh---- Fleetwood Mac! My fav!!)

Gosh... here comes David to see what is "wrong" with me...

Yep...definitely soul sisters, although I would challenge you with Delbert McClinton, Heard It Through The Grapevine and John Fogarty for those first three!
Still have my Tapestry album and still listen to it. It'd have to be the sound track for my life.
I bet you can still polish the silver off a belt buckle to a bunch of those.

Oh my, swoon.. We must be the same age or era...
I love those songs. Tapestry is an all time favorite. Carole King is timeless.
Thanks for the recall of soooo many memories!!

Just to add a tidbit from my experience as a lover of many of your favorites - there is a positive correlation to my driving speed and my music selection. So watch out when I'm listening to the O'Jays and we're getting on that "Love Train". Great Post!! :-) xoxo

Laura, you've got
me dancing in my chair
and strolling down
memory lane....And what
you say is so true about
the current generation.
My sophomore in HS love
some of the old disco
hits as well as Elvis,
Bono, classical, etc. etc.
I've always thought how
wonderful it must be to
have even ONE hit record;
to be immortalized that way,
entertaining others for
always. Fun post!

Hi Laura!
I'm glad you're back! I love reading your blog, it's one of my favorites. I like how you write to your daughters...are you planning on turning your blog into a book? I think that would be a neat idea for them, something else they will treasure from you!!!
I loved this post, music transforms, doesn't it? It always takes me back to the exact time...and the great feelings of my youth!
I love the Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald has such an amazing, unique voice. I would also add Earth Wind and Fire to my list, reminds me of the carefree days of college! Oh my!!!
Have a great week!

This list makes me smile. And you are right on with Tapestry; my mom used to belt out Carole King when I was a kid. Love her. Music really does span generations.
