Selling Our Home

Dear Friends-

Goodness, things in my life are in such a state of excited, stressed upheaval.

Our home went on the market January 13th, and we had a contract the next week.

Why are we moving? It becomes very simple and clear when it involves grandsons and family and adventure.

As I have said often in recent weeks, there are lots of moving parts involved in this process.

Here are a few things I have realized in recent weeks, and if you are going through a big change in your life like I am, these will probably make perfect sense.

* It is ok to cry. Crying doesn't mean the decision to move out of a home that has your soul embedded in every single inch of it is a wrong decision. It simply means that crying is processing.

*The reason (grandsons) you may be moving remains the same regardless of how you feel. Just because at times it feels overwhelming and scary doesn't mean the reason for doing it has changed. It just means it feels overwhelming and scary.

* Change is good and is not finite. Life doesn't give us a change limit. We can keep changing. We can be brave and strong.
Change is good.

Let me know if you are planning a big move this year.
We are in this together!

Congrats on your contract! And also for beginning a new, very exciting time in your life. Are you moving out of state or staying local? Have a good weekend.

Congrats - we're just waiting for our farm to sell so we can move and begin a new adventure. I can hardly wait! I see moving as closing a door so a new one can open which always helps me grow on the inside. It's a wonderful thing. Where are you headed?

I'm thinking of you sweet friend! I know how hard it is even when it's something that you really want.

I don't remember seeing the front of your house before. It's so pretty!

I have been right there with you. Our home sold in 6 days and we moved the week before Christmas. Everything was a whirlwind and one that had me in a dizzy for sure. I love our new home and am so happy we made the change. Good luck on your move.

Laura, change is so hard! I have always hated moving, but loved the "clean slate" that I got to move into. Know that wherever you land you will make your next home fabulous!

Great advice and encouragement. We are facing change just not sure what that change will look like yet. Yikes! God bless you and yours in your move...

Wonderful news about the contract. Can totally relate to the rest as we moved quite often when I was a child. You are in good company with several bloggers I know that are currently in the midst of selling, buying, building, moving.

Congratulations on your quick sell, Laura. I totally get those mixed feelings. We left a home a few years ago, and although we were happy to be moving to the new phase of our lives, leaving behind the face of so many memories was really tough - especially for me. Most women tend to feel pretty deeply and everything about our lives is all wrapped up together.
Wishing you well in your journey - and the space to cry when you need to! :)

We made the move last year....to be closer to our grandchildren. Our move was so stressful on me. I was leaving behind so many good memories. I could hardly stand it. But, I've come to realize those memories moved with me. Good luck with your move.

Congratrulations, Laura. How exciting to have it happen quickly -- exciting and way too daunting! I can imagine you have your work cut out for you. I hope your new home won't be too far away so instead of goodbye it is "see you soon!"

How exciting! We have moved around quite a bit and it's always bitter sweet!! The physical move itself can be exhausting but it will be worth it in the end!! Congratulations Laura!

Good luck with all of this. We went though some upheaval a few years ago when we thought we were moving. I empathize with the stress level and the emotion. We ended up taking our home off the market when we didn't go through with the purchase of the townhouse we considered. Suffice it to say that after packing up most of the house, moving things to storage, and then changing plans, I was in a stressed out state. Still have some things in storage and don't feel that I'm completely back into an organized state here. We are content with the decision to stay in our home though, so that alone is a big weight off our shoulders.
Congratulations on the quick sale and good luck as you move forward with the new adventure. Where are you moving?

Wishing you much luck in your move. We moved about 3 yrs ago and, altho we were so excited and moving into such a beautiful place, leaving our home of 40 years was most stressful. Memories embedded and connected in that house will be with me forever.

Laura, change can be exciting and difficult. Praying with you that everything will go well! Blessings~

Laura, a very wise assistant principal that I worked under always said, "To live is to change," and I always tell myself that if things are in a upheaval! If we ever move again, the sole reason will be to live closer to the grandchildren. Congrats on your quick sale and I'm sure you're taking that as a sign that it was meant to be!

Hi Laura! Oh, I so understand as we sold our house in Galveston, Texas to move to upstate New York to be with our grandchildren. It was a big move but I would do it all over in a heartbeat. I wish you the very best and for you to see and feel the joy!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Few things are as stressful as selling a house and moving. It doesn't surprise me your home sold so quickly. You have always been so meticulous and loving with it and I bet that was a big selling point. I hope you not only cry, but find a way to laugh a bit too!

Carol@BlueskyatHome said...

Laura, selling a home can be very emotional. I've done it many times when I wanted to and a couple of times when it was a bittersweet experience. You'll get through it and think of a new home to decorate and enjoy.

Wow, the fact that it happened so fast makes for having to process fast too. Change is good but can be stressful. We are planning on moving this year...it was going to be this summer but with the wedding coming up in October, we decided to wait until after that to make our move to the farm. (Less stress? Ha). I will be sad to leave the house my children grew up in but the farm will be a dream come true! Best wishes on your move. I know being closer to your grands will be wonderful.

To live close to grandchildren is the best!! You will adjust very well, I'm sure, & be so happy to be able to participate in the kids' lives on a regular basis. Congratulations on your big step & enjoy every minute of it!!

Oh, so glad I stopped by this evening. Bless your heart, since we just moved 18 months ago after living in the same house for 35 years, I feel your emotions. It is indeed a process and I hope it will all go smoothly for you. Hugs!

It's certainly a time of change and upheaval when we decide to 'pull up stakes and move' but it can also be such fun! I wish you all the best in this new adventure, and I look forward to seeing where you end up. Whatever you do, it will surely be life-enhancing!

Theresa said...

Oh Dear, I bet you are one busy lady! Grandchildren are the reason we do lots of things in life, right? I'll follow along as you make the big move! HUGS and PRAYERS coming your way!

I don't know how I missed this post in my feed but I stopped by to check in with you and see that the move is underway. It sounds like you're feeling your way through the experience and I can relate to your wise reflections. Crying and change, yep sometimes they go together rather nicely. But you are going to wake up one morning--maybe have already--and feel wonderfully light and giddy about things, I just know it....I'm sending you a warm hug,
Leslie

How exciting! I understand what you mean about crying isn't necessarily a negative. I've been doing some purging and though I'm not so much sad about tossing things out but going through have evoked some emotions I wasn't expecting. Good luck on your move!

Best wishes on your new adventure! We moved closer to our family two years ago and I feel
so fortunate to be close to our grand babies. I completely understand the feelings you are having! I thoroughly enjoy your blog and I am looking forward to seeing your new place.
Sending prayers!

Moving is hard, and it consumes so much emotional energy even under the best of circumstances. The therapist my daughter saw in high school (we moved before her 9th grade year) said that moving was not just a change, it was an experience of loss. The next move we made (before my son started high school--some people don't learn) was experienced by all of us as loss. It sounds like you're treating yourself gently, which is the best thing to do. Eventually things will settle, but in the meantime there is kleenex and chocolate.
