Dear Daughters: Family Sayings

IMG_9954

Dear Daughters,

I have decided that the sayings common to our family serve as a sort of safety deposit box.  They allow

you to set your worries aside, breathe, and wait for what is bound to happen next.

You know exactly what I mean if Nonnie (my mother) ever pressed her hand on your forehead when you weren’t feeling well, and she said “God love it.”

I have shared often about Papa’s “ Keep a tight rein”, but I haven’t mentioned in a while that he also liked to
ask my brother and I “Did you learn anything?”  We knew we were supposed to say yes, even if we needed time to figure out what exactly that was.

”No step for a stepper” is a family favorite as is “You came by it honest.”

And then there’s “A minute on your lips, forever on your hips.” That one usually comes up during Thanksgiving.

And so I leave you this evening with one more.

”Everything is going to be all right.”

It really is. I promise.

It may not look like what you thought, and it may not be what you planned, but it really is going to be all right.

Love, Mom

Do you have any favorite family sayings?

My FIL had so many sayings. when he passed away I wrote down all I could think of, and they pop into my mind at the appropriate time:"Here's your hat, what's your hurry"; "Everything has a place, in its place, neatly"; "Tastes like more"; to a naughty grandchild, "I'm going to knock you from amazing grace to a floatin' opportunity". Those are just for starters. I think it's what makes language rich! Linda

Love your sayings (especially the last one)!!!! Here are a few of my favorites that I picked up and said to my daughter while she was growing up: "Thinking's not gone out of style" (said in my best faux Scottish brogue and giving her a little knock upon her noggin) and "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride"! TFS!

You make me think. You make me want to have a blog where I talk to my kids. I relate always to what you say to yours.

Now, did you make that awesome sign? Because I want to make one too.

My grandma was the one who usually started these kinds of sayings...my favorite was "You just don't never know."

Yes...we have sayings...one of my favorites is what my parents used to say to each other after One would say 'I love you'...the other would say
"Me too, you"
In the modern day version my kids have shortened it...via texting to
I say 'luv ya'...they text back.

Oooo! I should make a sign! You've inspired me again! and I'm not even your daughter! (we're close enough in age to be sisters...so that's cool)

I call everyone I love a punkin-nanner and have been asked what in the heck is a punkinnanner...which of course is a cross between the sweetest pumpkin and banana you could ever dream of.

You are who you were when you were 8 and YOU are so right...everything really will be just fine!

love this post!

I have many but can't remember any of them now. Hope they stuck with my kids.

What a great post! It certainly reminds me of some of the sayings in my family. I would love to hear the ones my sons remember. I'll have to ask at our next family gathering.
