Late Tomato Planting

Homegrown Tomatoes

I am a little worried.

Normally, I plant my tomato plants on Valentine’s Day,
but all of the cold weather (even in South Texas)
has delayed things.

Our county extension agent gave me that Valentine’s Day planting advice years ago.

I planted my tomatoes  last February on Valentine’s Day, and I had the best tomato crop I have ever had.
Tomato Planting
My father (the farmer) said the soil is still too cold.

And so I wait…
Have a wonderful Monday!

PS:  I did plant a Pico de Gallo herb bed inside the spokes of a wagon wheel this afternoon.

More on that later.

Oh Miss Laura, I love it when I see "White Spray Paint" show up on my blogroll! Oh my, there's nothing better than home grown tomatoes! With your green thumb, they will be delicious!
I always think of John Denver and his song...
"Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes! What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes? Only two things that money can't buy,
And that's true love & homegrown tomatoes."
Love that you get your dad's sage advice, he's so smart! The ground will be warm soon, Miss Laura!

I had not heard of planting them so early. I can't wait to get back into our garden again. But, after last week's ice storm it will be awhile I am afraid.

I can't even imagine planting tomatoes in February! Here in Canada we can't risk planting them until nearly the end of May.

I would love to have fresh tomatoes this very minute, but we will soon. Homegrown are just the best.

Thanks for the planting tip. Never heard of that and it makes perfect sense.

I feel your pain Laura. I just planted tomato seeds yesterday and cleared a new tomato gardening patch. It's been far too cold and wet or I'd have had this done already too. Thankfully the parsley, thyme and basil sprouts are still alive through last week's cold snap. spring's definitely almost here :)

we can't even go outside in February! It would be wonderful to plant now but plotting in my head is about all I can do. That and drool over your gorgeous tomatoes!

I am contemplating whether to start these in my greenhouse now that the storms seem to be waning. I picked my last tomato in January after a very late start last year, so this year I would like a 'normal' crop! Have a great week x

We have been having a heat wave in the southwest. Tomatoes and cilantro are planted.

I would love to know more about your pico de gallo garden. Did you plant tomatillos? Onions?

You commented on my blog that you wonder if camellias will grow in zone 9, and I looked it up online and it says zones 7-9 for camellias. Ask your local nurseries and they can find camellias for your area. Happy gardening.

Here is my second comment! I see you are in Texas and I have two great friends who live there and we co-authored 2 books, with me living in California. I have a warm feeling for Texans thru my friends. They each live on ranches.
I have spring fever too, and am planting seeds now.

I plant them much later here in VA and some tomatoes come up in the garden from last year which is fine as I plant open pollinated ones. It has been a cold one.

How lucky to be able to plant already. My tomatoes can't go in the ground until the end of May...we start harvesting in late August and they are so delicious!

Thank you for visiting and your kind words! I live on the North Coast; in Ohio along the shores of Lake Erie. We currently have between 3 and 4 feet of snow on the ground, but it is in the 30's today and raining so we are hoping the count goes down. I cannot even imagine planting in February! I doubt I will even see ground until late March or April. So jealous of those ripe, red tomatoes!

I love smelling green tomatoes...hope they made it though the cold temperatures...they look nice and healthy. I noticed my Easter Lilly's coming out of the ground I think over a month ago and they made it through a couple of freezes...they seem to be a very hardy plant because they come up every year but usually don't bloom until after Easter. Good luck with your garden!

I've never been very successful planting tomatoes, but I'm very talented at finding great road side stands that sell beautiful home grown tomatoes. Hope that the ground warms up for you soon. Cherry Kay

please let us know when you do plant your tomatoes. two years ago we (husband) planted some and we got nothing! later found out from his farmer dad that the pot he used (terra cotta!) was too hot for those poor little tomato plants...last year i bought some already potted at a nursery and had minimal luck...thank good for my in laws who provide us with an abundance of tomatoes! but i'd love to grow my own...maybe you could do a short little post on how you plant yours?
