Market Days

At a recent neighborhood Market Days, I really got lucky.  In fact, once I parked my car, I was literally ten steps away from this.

Included in the set was this ironstone  tureen and ladle and these- all 12 of them.

Now, at Thanksgiving , is my crew the type to sit Norman Rockwell - like with small soup bowls holding some fragrant Harvest on the Homeland concoction, chatting and sharing anecdotes during their first course?

Well… maybe not… We do sit at the table, we do laugh a lot, and we do eat a lot, but when I try this, I can hear my father now:

“What is that for?” (referring to small soup bowl on his plate)

“What are we supposed to do with that?”

I am going to try anyway. We can then laugh about it all as he shakes his head and thinks,

What is Sister (me) up to now. That crazy girl.”

At the same sale, I found these.

Fourteen pewter napkin rings.  I immediately thought I could mix them with these, a hostess gift I received from a dear friend’s daughter.

Soup set: tureen, ladle, 12 bowls       $25.00

14 pewter napkin rings                         $ 7.50

Would I rather pay $5?  Sure, but over the years I have learned more about value.  That concluded my garage sale shopping for the morning.

I am linking to the following wonderful blog parties today.

You made a wonderful "haul", Miss Laura.
I have been to one yard sale in my life... at an old, old home in Navasota, Texas. It was a beautiful two-story home that was later featured in "If Walls Could Talk", a very favorite show of mine that I can rarely catch. It was so much fun and even my husband enjoyed it! (I think that was the biggest bonus of all.)
Have a fabulous, day, dear friend.

Now that's the deal of the century! I can't believe you bought the entire set for $25 and the napkin rings??? Pewter is the hottest thing going around here. What did you use for that grand theft...a staple or glue gun?

Hi Laura...What a wonderful find...I would have gone nuts over the tureen and little bowls as well. Pewter napkin holders are such a classic...you'll surely get a lot of use out of those...Anxious to hear of everyones reaction at Thanksgiving!!! xoxo~Kathy @ Sweet Up-North Mornings...

You presumed family comments made me laugh... I get the same thing from Ricky's family... our first dinner party they asked... "is it okay to use these cloth napkins?" gotta love 'em!

what great finds! some of that spicy homemade chili of yours would look great and taste divine served from them... then the family would know exactly what the bowls were for! ;)

I agree a $5 would be better, BUT when THIS much Laura stuff is 10 feet from your parked car - Karma baby! Obviously your husband hasn't sent your picture to EVERY sale around saying not to sell more "white" to you!

Kim said...

NO WAY! All that for $25? I cannot believe it Laura - that is a steal!!!! Good for you!

It's a wonderful thing to hit the mother load at garage sales... my heart does cartwheels whilst I calmly dicker over the prices.

My family Christmas is so big...I can't seat them all much less set a nice table. Instead my hubster and I eat from my very best every night until a week or so after the holidays. So I do get to have my cake and eat it too. That's probably how I gained all this weight...making such an event out of dinner at home.

I love the comments and have heard them too at dinner parties.

I would scream with delight if I came across the tureen with 12 bowls! Seriously, I would have thrown my body across them so no one else could even see them!
Nice job!

Oh wow. I love your finds. How fantastic. You are one lucky girl. What kind of soup are you going to make?

Hi Laura, that's so funny about your family at Thanksgiving. I'd definitely give it try though, because that tureen is too beautiful not to. One year I asked all the family to dress up (and I meant dresses and suits) for dinner and they looked at me like an alien had taken over my body. Needless to say it didn't happen. Everyone did look very nice though.

Oh. My. Goodness. What a deal! $25 for a large soup tureen and 12 minis...didn't you feel guilty? Naw, neither would I! My problem would be finding a place to store them. Good price on the napkin rings, too. Your Dad's comment was about what mine would have said...
