Computer Problems and a Blogging Revelation (*see PSSS.)

Dear Friends,

I am in the midst of huge computer problems. Things are crashing all over the place.

PS.     If you do not have one, go out and beg, borrow, or steal (or buy) an external hard drive.

PSS.   This issue has made me realize that I need to do something with all of my photos, rather than storing them for all of eternity on said hard drive.

PSSS.  When asked at a rehearsal dinner, for an out of town wedding this past weekend, if I was the photographer (because of my fixation on the wonderful table arrangements and the wielding of my giant camera and lens),

I was hit between the eyes with this humbling thought :

Family, friends, people of all areas of my life and special face to face events FIRST-

Blogging? That needs to be much further down the list-

If I were discussing this with my AP English students, I would use this analogy to emphasize the pitfall of faulty reasoning.

I would not bring my crochet hook, favorite library book, craft project, Hobby Lobby sacks, fabric remnants, or a vintage tractor engine to re-build to a wedding-

Why would I bring my blogging?

Some stories are not MINE to tell.

Be back soon with my stories,

Laura

I agree -- an external hard drive or other reliable backup is a must.
As for taking blogging to events ... well, my Mom used to bring her KNITTING almost anywhere. Not always a good idea. :-)

We use something called Time Machine that constantly backs up files. Sorry you are dealing with crashes.
I had to chuckly about your wedding comment. Sometimes I think my friends think I'm obsessed with taking photos. You think? LOL
Hope things improve with the computer situation. ~ Sarah

YOUR stories are always the best anyway! I'm still waiting on the book. Hey...you could print all your photos as a companion guide...just a thought!
I feel your pain with the computer. Getting mine back kept me from going off the ledge....doesn't take much to keep me happy.
Debbie
P.S. I can picture you tearing down a tractor engine...really!

I was just telling my Joe that I must go buy a hard drive! I never get hardcopies of photos anymore and would be crushed if I lost my photos. Sorting of priorities is a major task I realize. I know, Laura, how much you care about people. The fact you wrote this post illustrates your concern for others. Bless you. olive

I have missed coming by here for our chats lately. I haven't been getting out of my grubby gardening clothes much these days and I am not allowed to sit on the sofa with my laptop until I am clean. Thus the lack of my visits. I have to tell ya that I am in love with your flatware pattern. Soooo pretty. Your kitchen sitting area is beautiful.
What you say about blogging is so true. I don't carry my camera many places with me. And I would always ask permission to blog about someone I know, before posting. I think that is polite. Unless it was you of course, when you come to help me weed and plant. You can bet I would post that in a heart beat.LOL!

I actually had to purchase an external hard drive last week to back up everything before I took my computer to the Apple store.{they recommend it} I've talked about doing it forever cause I would be so upset to lose my pics on my computer. Hope you didn't lose much.
Regarding your post today, I'm always thinking I should take my camera more so I can post pics. Maybe after reading your post, not so much. Thank you, friend. And you do put family, friends, etc. first. Anyone who reads you knows that :-) xoxo

Very good advice about the external hard drive. It would be heartbreaking to lose the pictures of the grandchildren.
I agree with you regarding blogging and real life - one has to draw a line and remember that weddings, birthdays, holidays etc, when they belong to someone else, may not be appropriate blogging material.

My sympathies, cher! It happened to me, last year, but fortunately, when the computer came back from Dell, everything was still on it. So you better believe that I bought an external hard drive, and a flash drive. Good luck, my friend.

I hope you get your computer troubles sorted out soon! And sometimes we do need to leave our blogging hats at the door!

P.S. Guilty of wearing my hat more than I should! ;-)

What good advice on both topics. I am off to get an external hard drive this week. I would be crushed if I lost pictures.
I also agree about leaving the blogging world behind for certain occasions. And you are so right when you say those are not our stories to tell unless they ask us to do so.
Wonderful post.

I purchased an external hard drive this summer after too long. I knew I was walking a tightrope. Luckily for me, I had to take my computer into the Apple Store in San Diego (when I was out there working) and they recommend backing everything up. The whole 'not responsible for loss of data' thing - I'm glad I did it. I have too many photos and too many memories that I don't want to lose.

I hope your problems with the computer are solved soon.

Sorry about the computer problems. Weekend before last I had a house full and let others use both of my computers, they both now have "quirks" that I can't figure out how to cure. :(

I hope you get the computer issue settled. Photos take a lot of space. An external hard drive is a great way to go.
Good revelation shared.

These computers....
Love 'em and
sometimes, abhor
them, too!!! Good
luck getting things
sorted out....And
I agree with you
about blogging...
It's a hobby that
can be highly
addictive....and
that isn't always
a good thing {sorry,
Martha!}. Have
fun stepping out
of your blogger
shoes!

I, too, suffered the computer viruses and crashes a few weeks ago. Maddening! The computer geek guru from India game me some great tips and advice that have saved me many headaches since. I need to post about these tips because it sounds like many could use them.
And yes, you are right about the picture taking and taking the "blogging" with you wherever you go. I am also guilty of this. As you say, some things are not our story to tell. Good reminder and well said.

Ugh, I hate computer crashes. Luckily, I have a boy who uses his personal computer for work, and he backs up everything...including my hard drive...onto externals.
Have you ever heard of the car industry's respond to Bill Gates complaint about the car industry? Its pretty funny...all about computers and their crashings and mysterious failures.

Wow - you're so deep Laura. That's why I like your blog and the way you think!

I empathize with your computer issues....I have an external hard drive and keep my files backed up thank goodness, but I still lost some pictures and some files in my latest fiasco...now, I am backing up my files at least weekly. In regards to blogging about other things in our lives, I agree that we need to be cautious and not share others lives without permission, but sounds like we have missed out on an opportunity to see a great table centerpiece. LOL.
