Faux Twitter : Driving to Dallas

IMG_2160

(the night before)

10:00 pm  Made sure ‘the bust’ was secure in the back of my car.

11:30 pm  Couldn’t go to sleep because I was fixated on the alarm being set at 4:00 am.

12:00 am  Read several pages from the sequel to The Hunger Games. Thought about Round Top.

2:00 am  Realized I was in serious sleep trouble.

4:00 am  Alarm started beeping. Felt like I had sticker burs attached to my eyeballs.

4:30 am  Left house with eyes crossed needing coffee.

4:50 am  Stopped at truck stop north of Edinburg to buy a large coffee . Had out of body experience at register thinking I was a truck driver.

Made random comment to man behind the register about ‘losing time’. Realized he thought, who is this lady with stickers in her eyes?

5:50 am  Pulled into Border Patrol checkpoint south of Falfurrias. Rolled down back window . Agent aimed large flashlight into the back of my Tahoe and said,

   “Oh Wow.”

6:00 am  Stopped in Falfurrias at McDonald’s to buy another cup of coffee.

6:20 am  Nine miles later, stopped in Premont at Dairy Queen for the best insides to sausage, egg, and cheese tacos. Didn’t eat the tortillas.

   Had another cup of coffee.

6:30 am  Started listening to my IPod and singing along. Wanted more coffee. Had severe longing for my grandsons.

7:30 am  Stopped in Three Rivers to buy gas. Thought about Mary Jo and her new grandbaby.

9:00 am  Stopped in San Antonio at a convenience store. Noticed Goodwill across the street. Flew through Goodwill.

10:00am  Stopped at Outlet Mall at the Pottery Barn Outlet. Thought they might have a sale on fall things. Realized Pottery Barn and I may never be friends.

11:15am  Stopped at IKEA outside Round Rock. Got caught in a trap-like maze. Finally found checkout counter. Clerk didn’t give me a sack. Did not understand IKEA.

1:45pm  After multiple driving anxiety attacks on 35 , stopped in Lorena. Love driving through that small town. Ladies from the Methodist Church were

outside decorating for fall with garlands and pumpkins. Bought a cup of chili and a large iced tea to go at a cafe on Main Street.

These small adventures make me so happy.

3:00pm  Made it to Dallas in spite of myself. Waited at Half Priced Books for my daughter to get out of school. Tomorrow the work begins.

I love road trips...I'd be drinking Diet Dr. Pepper instead of coffee. I hate to get up early; you're a real road warrior! Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Cherry Kay

Dear Neighbor,
We miss your energy and the suspense of your next outdoor projects.
Glad you made it safely to Dallas on such little sleep. Will have to remember Lorena. I love small towns too.
You are amazing.. I would not be able to find the way to my car in the morning without coffee!!
Keep us posted on the progress. Can't wait to see what y'all get accomplished.

Glad you made it, wish I had known you were going to Ikea, I could have given you some tips. It's been dangerous having one 15 minutes away! So happy that you got to Dallas before the weekend. We are leaving Friday - yes we will be stuck in the giant parking lot that is I35 on OU weekend. Have fun! Kat

Girlfriend, that much coffee and I would have had to include a lot of Shell station stops to my Twitter talk!
I love Lorena too...charming little village.
Does Ikea remind anyone else of those turnstile wait areas for amusement park rides or is it just me? I feel the same way about Central Market...no backing up...only moving forward!
Debbie
P.S. Wish I was part of that load in the back of your car which btw...I would have loved to seen the expression on that agent's face when he flashed it!

Oh Laura, I felt as if I was right there with you on your trip. Love the description of everything! LOL! Did you travel alone? You are braver than I am if you did! I would like to take a drive to Houston sometime (our oldest son is in Med School in Houston) but hubby does not think it's a good idea. Someday I will do it. LOL Have a wonderful day.

This post made me laugh out loud! I love the part about the out of body experience. Have fun in Dallas this weekend, the weather should be great for anything!

I love road trips too and always overdose on coffee and have to make umpteen dozen stops as it runs through me! I'm with you on Pottery Barn. I remember the first time I made my hubby pull into the one between San Antonio and Austin and being so disappointed by its lack of pottery. They do have fabo Christmas decorations, though! Now I'm living in a land far, far, away from Round Top, but my daughter lives in Houston. Next year.

Have so much fun this week!!!!!!

Glad you made it safely. If I drank that much coffee on a road trip, I would have to make a lot of pit stops. :D

Hilarious! Glad to see that even though you are keeping the hours and diet of a trucker you're not talking like one, LOL.

Can't wait to see how the place comes out.

You painted a good mental picture of your travels. How on earth did you drive all night? Sounds like you kept it interesting anyway. I know you're happy to be with your daughter. Have fun!

I have had days like this where I was so excited about the trip the next day that I absolutely could. not. sleep.

It is not a good feeling. Well thankfully you made it there safe!

Laura I dream of a road trip with you girl. You know how to even make the trip sound like an event, which I am a firm believer it is. Part of the entire experience.

Nothing short of an emergency could get me out of bed at 4:00 am! Loved your description of your out of body experience! lol I can't drive until I have at least two cups of coffee. Glad you made it and hope you have a great weekend. Have fun!

I have seen 0400 too many times over the past two weeks, so I have loads of sympathy for the sticky feeling in your eyes. I'm glad you made it safely.(and I agree with you with regard to Pottery Barn. I've given up looking there - it's just not me)

Enjoyed your play-by-play commentary! You were in my neck of the woods as you drove to Dallas. Lorena is very close to us! I love that Pottery Barn/William-Sonoma outlet in San Marcos. Your latest post sounded as if your time with your daughter was well-spent!
