Creating a Soothing Space And Other Bad Ideas

IMG_7837

(Yes…that is a rogue Christmas tree on my dresser.)

I am on some sort of boomerang circuit with TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, and Ross,

trying to find affordable mercury glass lamps for our pale gray bedroom,

which I decided needed to be ‘soothing’..

I now have 3 pairs of lamps standing around the room,

hoping I still have the receipts.

I even bought lamps with a pair of gray silk shades

and animal print lining because the base was pretty.

I have in fact done the very opposite of what I thought I would be doing.

I have made myself crazier trying to calm things down.

And…

to top it off…

I have decided I may not be a gray person,  but please don’t tell my husband that

because he already said to

‘shut it down’,

as in repeatedly.

So this is what I am going to do.

*I am going to return the lamps.

* I am going to find another metal color (as in dark gold leaf) to bring into the room to anchor it.

Right now it feels like a giant snowdrifting Christmas decoration.

*I am going to save my money for a muted gray

traditional rug (choice B) to anchor the bed because right now it seems to be floating.

*I am going to try and hang gold framed botanicals or something like that, using my anti-gallery wall method.

*I am going to begin a quest to find two small, similar but not matching chests to use as end tables

because this limbo low business has had its day.

In the meantime, life goes on, and I am going

to stay in the moment and be

SOOTHING

to others.

That’s much better. I don’t feel so crazy now.

I love the lamps, but understand where you are coming from. And I think the room looks lovely, but also understand that it's not meeting your vision. I hope you find what you are looking for and I know it will look wonderful when you have it just the way you want it!

I think it is quite beautiful but a touch of gold to warm it up will be nice. I am ready to "go grey" in my bedroom too but since I already have antique gold based lamps I will use those to warm it up. I do love the mercury glass but that with grey and white is definitely a chic but icy palette. You will choose to accessorize beautifully, I have no doubt. Can't wait to see the finished and soothing room.

I think its beautiful honestly, but I see what you are saying. pick a color from that beautiful chair I see or pick a color from the new carpet you want and have that be your guide color. I warmer blue or a creamy toffee maybe to warm things up. Maybe grab a throw blanket from around the house with warmer colors to make it feel cozy? I paired a paris grey TV cabinet in my living room with a toffe colored wall and it actually looks really comfy and calm. I love your headboard that is stunning.

Just let it all out & b-r-e-e-a-t-hhhhhhh. Thanks for the smiles ~ again. I know that in the end it will come together & worth all the painstaking hunting & gathering process.

Oh I hear ya Laura (although I love your beautiful bedroom), but once I tried to live with the all muted sepia tones that are hot now in some decor and found myself going nuts for my florals and pastels and had to redo everything I had done. And choosing lamps drives me insane!!!!!so I live with my old ones, but every time I go to the stores I have to go to the lamps hoping that I will find the perfect ones for me.
I haven't yet.
I know you will create a beautiful soothing room soon.
hugs from here...

This post has me laughing. I am yearning for a neutral room, but am nervous that I might find out that I don't like it after all. Yikes! Things look so beautiful in the magazines, but in reality....hmmmmm.....Hope you find the receipts! Linda

I need some colour everywhere - even in the places that need to be most calm, such as bedroom and bathroom. I like your idea for the chests as bedside tables (I would, as that's what I have done on one bedside) but most of all I love your writing style!

Isn't it funny when we try something new that is out of the box for us, and we want to accomplish something...it turns out that we not only don't accomplish what we wanted, but we feel even worse for the attempt? What is wrong with us? LOL. Your husband sounds like mine...he is there for you but he doesn't understand the need to make things right, which sometimes means repainting or changing something after a really short time because it just does not work. I been into white most of the time. However, lately, I found a black/red/white/gray wallpaper and me & GH (great hubby) decided to try in our kitchen wall. So far, so good. We both contented until now.

What an exciting moment when we both fade up!

Good luck, lady?

P.S.
I found you when browsing bloggie friends and friends blogs.

I always toy with the idea of monochrome rooms-which look gorgeous-but knowing how I am, I couldn't live in one. However, some charcoal gray (preferably velvet) drapes could help a lot. Maybe a "pop" of orange could also help?????????? I know I shouldn't suggest this on "White Spray Paint" but what if you painted the headboard dark gray or antique silver? Please don't shut it down, you are almost there!

Laughing at how
your calm space is
having the opposite
affect on your psyche!!
And YES, we have to
tread carefully with the
hubbies, who don't always
"get" it!!

Happy Weekend,
xx Suzanne

I love the mercury glass lamps. In my opinion you just need a few pops of color. Do whatever makes you happy cuz thats what decorating is all about!
